Small Town

Cindy told Bo to stop making things up. She said she saw Benny in the bar the night before. But Bo said he saw the whole thing. He said the police found the body and he saw it early in the morning, and that was after the bar closed. Cindy said he didn’t know what he was saying, and Bo said he knew damned well. It was out back at that hotel where that shootout happened. Cindy flat-faced Bo but he didn’t notice. He went on talking about the bank robbery that happened just that same morning where the man and woman died. He said, did y’all know that fool had a shootout with a bb gun? He didn’t wait for an answer. Bo retold the old story about the robber who robbed a Baskin Robbins a few years before with a bb gun. The teenager at the counter recognized the air-gun and hit the robber with a mop handle, the robber was arrested and the teenager was a local celebrity. Bo said that the same guy did it again, only this time he robbed a bank.

He robbed the bank with his pregnant girlfriend and tried to hide out in a hotel down the street. Both Cindy and I knew that part of the story. Bo reminded us, they got kilt. Then he got to the point. They found Benny back behind the hotel while they was ‘vestigatin’ the bank robbery. Cindy poured three shots of cheap whiskey. We were quiet for a moment. Then Bo spoke up, you didn’t know them fools who robbed that bank, didja? Cindy poured one more, for me. I was going to miss Benny, too.
