A crystal afternoon
Trees are finished blooming
Leaf-litter crumpled and damp
Glacial pool licks a high water mark
I’m watching gulls circle jagged hills
In the Rocky Mountains
An omen? The earth is flat
Again. 9.11 was weird so
Our new leaders say
We can’t trust ourselves so
The earth is flat again.
I say leaders and so might they
Lead those who might only follow
A perfect time for omens
Gulls heading south in July
The birds better come up with something better
Before the idiot birds reach the Mojave
Before their bleached bones dust the saguaro wind
