Scene Without Adverbs

~For Billy Still who told his story his way

It’s Saturday
the way I’ve remembered it
An otherwise perfect Saturday
Those clouds
like cheap drywall patch
in a show-home’s second-floor bath
the agent shows
like an afterthought
Oh look at that blue!
And over here …

Saturday the way I’ve remembered it
when you said your last words to me
There are serious problems with this trip
The voice
Your voice
It rained the day prior
As I have remembered it
you refused your afternoon
morphine once you’d had it
sang Dazed and Confused
while we watched Tour de France
I read Tinkers
by the sunlight
filtered through all that rain
Your grown children binged
Indiana Jones at your side
through the night You
knowing God
told stories
as you remembered them
to your own father
who had long ago passed

  1. This brought back memories of sitting bedside while my sister was dying.
